Swimming provides an overall workout for the body's major muscle systems, and can effectively define and tone the legs, upper arms and shoulders. The Disabled World website reports that because water is significantly denser than air, your muscles must work approximately 30 percent harder when you are swimming than they do in land-based exercise. This extra muscular output can help burn fat, increase endurance and build lean muscle tissue.
